Mack was an early innovative force in the development of fire fighting equipment. It was the first manufacturer to develop engine-driven mechanical hoists for aerial ladders, the first to institute pressure-volume, series parallel centrifugal pumpers and the first to offer a completely enclosed sedan pumper (introduced in 1935). Because heavy booster tanks were often needed to supply water to rural or newly developed areas, Mack was often the vehicle of choice because of its sturdy and substantial construction.
